Fortress of Solitude Journaling
Did you know that Superman has a secret getaway where he can hide, relax and totally be himself? This place is deep in the Arctic and called Fortress of Solitude. Nowadays it is challenging for us to retreat to a quiet place and get away from it all. Or maybe you do have that perfect secluded nook. Where is it? Or maybe…just maybe…you could have a quiet moment. Then quick… grab a pen and jot down your thoughts!

These pandemic times have been quite surreal. Every day, the news announced an unprecedented closure or a new record on deaths from the virus. And with that, schools have closed down- some for the rest of the school year. While teachers scrambled to get their classrooms up and running virtually, through distance learning, every family rearranged their schedules and lives to homeschool their children and figure out how to do their daily tasks while being sheltered in. And during these turbulent changes in home life and finances, there was uncertainty about the disease itself and to best protect the family from getting sick and passing it on to our loved ones.
So many different emotions and from so many different members of your family around you simultaneously. We did want to just crawl into a safe space until this was all over. We needed to find a new normal in this atmosphere of chaos and uncertainty.
“I was thinking, too, of Superman and his fortress of solitude.”
Michael Chabon
I don’t get many quiet moments in my house. I wish I had a place to retreat to like Superman, to get away from it all. And since that is not possible, I can journal what I’m feeling and experiencing at this very moment. A Fortress of Solitude is one way to process life out during a pandemic. Gene Luen Yang created a series of mini-lessons to help us write in our journals, highlighting different tools. Won’t you also give it a try?
